Dr. Vincent Balanag Jr: "Do not underestimate symptoms like coughing, chest tightness, headaches, and difficulty breathing—they could be warning signs of serious lung diseases such as tuberculosis, COPD, or lung cancer. These conditions can drain your health and finances long before claiming your life..."
Urgent Warning! By the end of 2024, the hospital has already received over 2 million patients suffering from lung-related diseases. Of these, 60% were diagnosed at an advanced stage with severe symptoms, leading to high mortality rates. The majority, 73%, are men aged 40 and above, while the remaining are women of similar age. One crucial fact you need to know is that the mortality rate for lung-related diseases is as high as conditions like heart disease or cancer.
According to the latest report from the World Health Organization (WHO), the Philippines currently ranks third in the world for the prevalence of respiratory-related diseases, following China and Russia.
The main cause stems from the COVID-19 pandemic, which has weakened many people's immune systems, increasing the risk of respiratory-related illnesses beyond normal levels, coupled with a high number of smokers and severe air pollution contributing to the worsening situation, including tuberculosis (TB), COPD, and lung cancer. Unfortunately, many people are still unaware of the severity of the situation and lack the necessary awareness in preventing and managing these diseases.
Experts warn that without urgent measures to address these issues, the Philippines will face a serious public health crisis in the near future.
